This week I thought I would add some breadcrump tidbits or two as to why I found the tweet a great Discover point to launch into a design thinking challenge... Here goes

Discover Point: Why teach? Why are you a teacher? This week, my husband was challenged with these questions on his first day in a new school by a student. Unfortunately these questions were not posed in a curious way but more in a disrespectful way. The student felt my husband had wasted his education to become a teacher. It makes me wonder who and how many people may believe this about teachers, (or possible other professions).

Discover Point: I wonder how noise affects students in a classroom setting? How does noise affect others? What spaces are soothing? What spaces are frustrating due to the volume? In a compare and contrast type of scenario, a Science class could take the behaviors of different animals and their environments and C/C vs humans? A great back to school challenge as a classroom environment should be fluid, flexible, and interchangeable. What do students do when responding to noise in their spaces?

Discover Point: How is learning made visible in the learning spaces of the school? How about outside of school? Why does visible learning make a difference? Again, another great opportunity for students and teachers to establish and renew their learning environments. I am reminded of the Blue School- the start of the school year the walls are blank and the colors are bland... it is the learning that brings the spaces alive and painted with color.

Discover Point: Think Glocal. It is amazing how many grassroots, mom N pop, desperately underfunded community organizations are ripe for help, partnership, and/or need tackling an aspect to their organization they either don't have the time or awareness of yet. These organizations are great spaces to discover opportunities for design. Mind you, design thinkers are not Knights in Shining Armor or Superman. We do not go towards people saying you have a problem we have all the answers. No, what we do is go towards people to gain understanding, build relationships, and uncover stories and opportunities. A great DEEPdt Learning mean to use around this topic is call Release the Cracken

Discover Point: A pre-packaged design thinking challenge. What a great & quick DT lap to take from this tweet. A user has made a request, cited a conflict and shared an experience. I would use this tweet as a 30 minute or less Rapid Cycle challenge. The empathy for this challenge would need to be sought from other adults by such as showing the image and soliciting reaction and have you ever experienced something like this...

Discover Point: Again another great neefinding opportunity. I would use this discover point to launch into practicing needfinding. A design thinker always can practice needfinding (it should never get old or been there done that). By the way, you don't always have to do the whole shabang DT process to practice your DT laps and flex your empathy muscles.

Discover Point: When it comes to tackling your first full force DT challenge, I always say redesign a space/environment. This discover point is a great frame to a challenge. What if school looked more like preschool? Take that question to your users and find out. In discover, I would have my designers go observe (not interact) in local preschools to gauge a better understanding of what life is like in a Pre-K world before their needfinding. Observation is a great setup for a design challenge as designers can draw on their findings during needfinding yet also provide some context without interference. I am reminded of Gary Stager quote:
"In my article "Less Us, More Them," I argue that anytime an adult feels it necessary to intervene in an educational transaction, they should take a deep breath and ask, "Is there some way I can do less and grant more authority, responsibility, or agency to the learner?"

Discover Point: This is a great launching point for the Back to School crowd. Who are your students this year? Introverts? Extroverts? Do they know how to collaborate? Will I have to teach them collaboration? Do I know how to "teach" collaboration? What are others' experiences around collaboration?

Discover Point: Another prepackaged launch to a DT challenge. You could have your students take the image at face value and run through a quick 30 min or less DT Lap... Or they could use it as a launching point to seek out the "front entrances" of their school. Yes, I meant for "front entrances" to be plural. A school has an immense amount of doorways and for me each one is an entrance for either invitation or danger. For as may d.TEAMSs that you have in your classroom, there are countless "front entrances" begging for a redesign...

Discover Point: Badging (UGH) What carrot can we dangle in front of our students to get them to do the things we want them to do? Do get them to care about their learning? To get them to take initiative? To get them to Do with a smile? (I just realized the clicking and clacking of typing all those bold words get more intense with each key stroke). An amazing DEEP design thinking challenge would be to seek a better understanding from students as to what makes them tick with it comes to learning? What "carrot" would bring them to the table of learning? Is badging the way? Or is micro-credentialing (a more intellectual way of saying badging IMO). Are schools seeking compliance, accountability, or possible a curation of learning?
